You have started an exercise program. Or maybe you have a history of starting exercise programs only to give up out of boredom. Or maybe you got injured. How do you know you can keep it up this time?
Here are a few tips to stay motivated:
Start easy. Often, people are so excited to start an exercise program that they go out too hard and get injured within the first week or two. Don’t let this happen to you! Start slowly, with a walk around the block, for example. When you are ready for strength training, start light. The goal is to lift heavy things in order to build muscle, but your muscles need to adapt to the movements with lighter weights first.
Exercise with a friend. A workout buddy will keep you accountable, especially when you don’t feel like exercising. You don’t want to let down your friend.
Make a date with yourself. Put it in your calendar. If it’s not in your calendar it is easy to forget about it. Treat it like any other appointment or meeting that you consciously schedule.
Keep a log of your exercise. Buy a small notebook and write down the date and the mode of exercise. You don’t need a lot of detail (unless you want that). At the end of the week/month, look through your log and feel good about yourself for having stuck to your exercise program for a week/month. You will be motivated to start week/month 2!
